How accurate does a rocket have to be when it launches?

Incredible question! When a rocket launches to reach orbit, its trajectory has to be controlled within fractions of a degree. A deviation of just 1 degree at launch can mean missing your target by thousands of kilometers by the time you reach orbit. That’s why every sensor, every gyroscope, and every thruster valve is calibrated — checked against a known reference standard to make sure it reads true.

That’s exactly the right question, Teddy. In 1999, NASA lost the Mars Climate Orbiter — a $327 million spacecraft — because one engineering team used metric units and another used English units. The numbers looked “close enough,” but that small measurement mismatch sent the spacecraft into the Martian atmosphere instead of orbit. Gone.
